Ella and Liam waited for Ben in the family’s business suite of offices for Green Hill Investigations which was housed in a beautiful Victorian mansion in Quinsigamond. Raisin sat on the cozy seat of the bay window looking out at the street and sidewalk. While they chatted, Ella prepared some equipment for the next day’s ghost encounter.

“Do you want the EVP wrist recorders?” Liam was looking in the closet for the things Ella needed. EVP stood for electronic voice phenomenon, sounds or words picked up by audio recorders that people didn’t often hear while in the presence of a spirit. Sometimes what was heard on the recorder was clearly a voice, but other times, there were only unidentifiable sounds.

Ella preferred the wrist recorders to the box-type version since she didn’t have to waste time adjusting settings. The wrist recorders were also better since carrying around the larger recorder could produce extraneous sounds and noises. She didn’t really need the equipment, but she liked to use them so she could listen later to refresh her memory about what had been said.

“Would you grab the three flashlights, too?” Ella requested.

“I already packed those in the case.” Liam carried four wrist recorders and placed them in the metal case Ella used to carry the equipment.

“You’re very efficient,” Ella smiled, glad for Liam’s help.

“I’m a fast learner. Six months ago, I had no idea this stuff existed and now I’m helping you pack your ghost equipment.” Liam looked at Ella. “If anyone had told me about ghosts and spirit investigations months ago, I’d have told them they needed a visit to a psychiatrist.”

Ella laughed. “You have an open mind and you’re very accepting of new things.”

Raisin turned her head and trilled at them.

Liam looked at his girlfriend with a twinkle in his eye. “Well, having a crush on someone special is a very strong motivator for being open to unusual things.”

Ella squeezed Liam’s hand as she walked past him on her way to the equipment closet.

Raisin meowed and a few seconds later, Ben opened the door to the offices.

Hey, all.” He went to the window to pat the feline. “How’s the cutie cat?”

Ella asked her brother if there were any other pieces of equipment he wanted for the next day’s ghost encounter.

“Wrist recorders, the black stones, the flashlights. Maybe we should pack the vests and hard hats just in case.”

“Good idea.”

The next afternoon, they planned on returning to the mansion museum formerly owned by the Buchanan family to see the ghost they’d met there a week ago. They knew he could be quite destructive and dangerous so the hard hats might come in handy.

“Can we go to the museum an hour later than planned?” Ben asked. “I have a reenactor client coming to the barn to pick up some things I made for him.” In addition to making other popular items in his blacksmith shop, Ben molded iron and bronze, and sometimes steel, into armor, helmets, and swords for historical reenactors.

“That works for me. The later time is probably better for Livvy anyway.
